Entitled Give and Take, this year the course has Hans Haacke as its visiting professor. Born in Germany in 1936, the artist lives in New York. The Course, directed by Annie Ratti since 1995, is curated by Anna Daneri and Cesare Pietroiusti. On the 20th of July, to celebrate the conclusion of the Advanced Course in Visual Arts, Hans Haacke’s first solo exhibition in Italy open at the Spazio Culturale Antonio Ratti, Largo Spallino 1, in Como. The exhibition, will be open until the 5th of September 2010, Tuesdays to Sundays, from 4 to 8 pm. In response to the architecture of San Francesco and its frescos, Hans Haacke has chosen 3 works for this exhibition. Wide White Flow of 1967 dominates the central nave. Along the side naves and in the spaces behind the apse is installed a work entitled The Population meets St.Francis, a series of photographs of spontaneous plant growth, taken in an open-air courtyard of the Berlin Reichstag. The plants have sprouted at the seat of the German parliament in the artist’s ongoing participatory project DER BEVÖLKERUNG (To the Population). This dedication to all residents of the country puts into perspective the exclusive and historically burdened inscription DEM DEUTSCHEN VOLKE (To the German People) on the building’s façade. Before the Bundestag accepted this work in 2000 by a slim majority, the proposal had generated a heated, nation-wide debate. Since its inauguration 10 years ago, more than 280 Members of the Bundestag have contributed soil from their election districts. The last work shown in the exhibition is a site-specific work entitled Once upon a time. In areas of the 17th century frescos of the apse, which, due to the ravages of time, are now blank, the artist introduces continuously changing glimpses of Italy’s contemporary corporate culture.
